The island nation of Trinidad and Tobago sits just 11 miles off the cost of Venezuela and is made up of 23 separate islands - Trinidad and Tobago being the two largest. Trinidad and Tobago, like many other Caribbean nations has a turbulent history - the island of Tobago has been in the hands of the British, French and Dutch at varying points in the past.  Christopher Columbus named the island of Trinidad as he passed through at the end of the 15th century and the Spanish went on to colonise the island. The capital of Trinidad is called Port of Spain. Today, Trinidad and Tobago is a republic within the Commonwealth after grasping full independence in 1976.
