The tiny island nation of St. Kitts and Nevis has a population of less than 40,000 people and a land area of just 261 square kilometres. Like many of the Caribbean island nations, St. Kitts and Nevis has spent much of it's recent history in the hands of the British or the French. Also known as St Christopher and Nevis, the islands gained full independence in 1983.

St Kitts and Nevis is another Caribbean nation struggling economically and in a state of structural transition. Tourism and off-shore banking are replacing the sugar industry as the nation's main income stream.
